MSME / Udyam Registration in India

1. What is MSME / Udyam Registration in India?

MSME / Udyam Registration in India (formerly known as Udyog Aadhaar) is a government certification for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises issued by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Ministry of MSME). Udyam Registration is free, 100% online, and provides MSMEs with official recognition, access to government subsidies, priority sector lending from banks, tax benefits, and legal protection against delayed payments under the MSMED Act, 2006.

Launched on July 1, 2020, the Udyam Registration portal replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar system with a more robust framework that automatically fetches data from GST and Income Tax portals. MSME / Udyam Registration in India is now based on investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover. It is mandatory for businesses to register as MSME if they want to avail benefits under government schemes like PMEGP, CLCSS, ZED Certification, and collateral-free loans under CGTMSE.

2. MSME Classification 2024 — Investment and Turnover Limits

The Government of India revised MSME classification criteria in 2020 to unify manufacturing and service sectors under a single definition. MSME / Udyam Registration in India is now based on two parameters: investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. Both criteria must be met to qualify for a specific MSME category.

Micro Enterprises

Investment in plant and machinery or equipment: Up to Rs. 1 Crore. Annual turnover: Up to Rs. 5 Crore. Micro enterprises form the backbone of India's MSME sector and include small traders, home-based businesses, cottage industries, and individual service providers.

Small Enterprises

Investment in plant and machinery or equipment: Up to Rs. 10 Crore. Annual turnover: Up to Rs. 50 Crore. Small enterprises include growing businesses, small manufacturers, retail chains, IT startups, and professional service firms.

Medium Enterprises

Investment in plant and machinery or equipment: Up to Rs. 50 Crore. Annual turnover: Up to Rs. 250 Crore. Medium enterprises are established businesses with significant operations, multiple branches, and sizeable workforce.

Both manufacturing and service sectors follow the same classification. If a business exceeds the investment or turnover limit of its current category, it must update its MSME / Udyam Registration in India to reflect the new classification.
